Otolaryngology Research

The Division of Otolaryngology is actively involved in research related to ear infections, sleep disordered breathing in children, cystic fibrosis, olfaction, and lymphatic malformations of the head and neck.

Recently completed trials include a study of a topical medication for eczema of the ear and a trial investigating the benefits of an innovative coating on tympanostomy (ear) tubes. Within the next 6 months, the Division of Otolaryngology will be starting trials involving new techniques for repairing tympanic membrane perforations, evaluating sinus surgery for patients with cystic fibrosis and novel approaches for managing patients with neck masses. The research program within the Division of Otolaryngology collaborates with the Cystic Fibrosis Center, the Department of Psychology of San Diego State University and the Division of Otolaryngology at UCSD.

We will be recruiting patients once our planned studies are open and enrolling children.

Current research studies:

  1. Injection therapy for lymphatic malformations
  2. Assessment of children with sleep disordered breathing and suspected obstructive sleep apnea
