Intro/Overview

San Diego Children's Hospital/UCSD Pediatric and Adolescent Dermatology Rotation 2003/2004

Welcome to Pediatric and Adolescent Dermatology!

We hope that your pediatric dermatology rotation will provide you with a broad ranging exposure to pediatric skin disease. We see a wide variety of skin disease from common warts and acne to rare genodermatoses. We will make every effort to provide you with exposure to this diverse cohort of patients and to educate during clinic time. It would be worthwhile for each resident to keep a list of interesting cases to direct later reading and discussion.

Your responsibilities are to attend clinics at Rady Children's Hospital (including outpatient department and satellites), to assist in the evaluation of inpatient consultations, attend conferences, and to read about the disease entities that you see. You are responsible for knowing when/where you are scheduled. The dermatology schedule is available on line at http://calendar.yahoo.com/chhc_derm. Due to unforeseen circumstances, it may be necessary to change the schedule without notice. Please check the schedule frequently. We attempt to email any schedule changes to those rotating with us. If you wish to be emailed or have any questions, please contact Debra Whisenand at 858-576-1700 ext.3886 or email dwhisenand@chsd.org.

Please call prior to the first day (858-576-1700 ext. 3886) to find out where and when to meet the Fellow on-call. The Fellow will orient you to our clinic and explain your responsibilities for the month. (Please see attached summary of Resident Responsibilities.)

Rady Children's morning hours begin at 8:30am and afternoon office hours begin at 1:00pm (office and day surgery procedures may begin earlier - please check the schedule for specific days/dates). Schedules should be confirmed and specific questions regarding scheduling should be discussed with  Debra Whisenand. Please discuss with the attendings the schedule of consultation rounds. It is the responsibility of each resident rotating through Dermatology to discuss/inform Debra Whisenand of any scheduling conflicts (vacations, appointments, meetings, etc) prior to starting the rotation.

A weekly academic conference is held each Tuesday at lunch. Lunch is provided but food orders need to be given to Patti Oden (858 576-1700 ext. 4269) by the Monday prior to the meeting. During these academic meetings we review the interesting cases from the week before and discuss diagnostic and therapeutic issues. Students, residents and fellows will be asked to prepare a short presentation on a featured case or relevant issue. Every second Tuesday lunch meeting we incorporate a Journal club and residents may be asked to present an article during their rotation. Please confirm via the Yahoo calendar the date and time of journal club and discuss with the Fellow on-call the residents’journal club responsibilities.

Every Tuesday (day may change as of july 2003) at 7:30 AM the fellows conduct a teaching session with attending supervision. The session will involve either a pediatric dermatology textbook chapter review or a therapeutics session. The attendings will give a lecture once weekly on a rotational basis on various lecture topics. Once monthly within this lecture series the residents and fellows will be given surgical lectures or a hands on pigs feet surgical lab.

A Pediatric Dermatology Pathology Conference is held on the second Thursday of each month at UCSD Hillcrest from 11:00 -12:00 after grand rounds (please check on Yahoo calendar). This will be a teaching conference that both the residents from Navy and UCSD can attend. Attendings from both institutions will be welcome. The rotating senior dermatology resident and designated Fellow are responsible for coordination of the conference so please discuss this with the designated Fellow the week prior to the conference. The responsibilities include acquisition of pathology slides, transport of slides to Dr. O'Grady and summarizing patients clinical histories. The senior derm resident is expected to do a case presentation if there are any cases of particular interest. (Subspecialty pediatric residents are welcome to attend, though not required).

Recommended readings:  The recommended text books are “Clinical  Pediatric Dermatology” by Hurwitz or “Pediatric Dermatology 2nd Edition”  by Bernard Cohen. A collection of references are kept in the Rady Children’s Hospital office, and are available for review. This collection of articles includes common and uncommon pediatric dermatology conditions. Residents are free to COPY any of the articles they feel are useful to them (you may use the copy machine in the administrative office), and residents will refer to these articles as a reference when relevant patients are seen with the attending physicians.

Other reading references include “Pediatric Dermatology,” Schachner & Hansen editors, and “Dermatology in General Medicine, Fitzpatrick et al editors. Several atlases are useful; these include “Atlas of Clinical  Dermatology” by duVivier, “Atlas of Pediatric Dermatology” by Weinberg, Prose, & Krystal, “Color Textbook of Pediatric Dermatology” by Weston and Lane, and “Textbook of Neonatal Dermatology”  by  Eichenfield,  Frieden & Esterly.

We suggest you keep a list of the conditions you see to direct your reading. This will help to organize your reading.

The Rady Children's Hospital dermatology office is at 8010 Frost Street, Suite 602. The main phone number is (858) 966-6795.

For rotating “subspecialty” pediatric residents:

We will attempt to have follow-up of patients scheduled to coincide with your assigned clinics. It is very important that you inform us of any conflicts with the schedule as far in advance as possible.
