Established in 1982, the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology is one of the leading groups of pediatric otolaryngologists in the nation. The group consists of physicians who specialize in the treatment of ear, nose, throat, neck and airway problems. Each doctor has completed advanced fellowship training that enables him or her to practice in the subspecialty of pediatric otolaryngology. All of the doctors are board certified in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and devote their full practice to children.
The physicians in the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology specialize in the evaluation and management of the following otolaryngology conditions:
Airway disorders such as laryngomalacia, subglottic stenosis, and vocal cord paralysis
Congenital and acquired masses of the head and neck
Craniofacial abnormalities including cleft lip and palate
These pediatric otolaryngologists also have special expertise in the management of complex medical conditions (e.g., craniofacial disorders, cystic fibrosis, cardiac disease, hematologic disorders) in children. Close affiliations with other specialists and health care providers allow these physicians to provide the integrated care that is often required of these children.
The division members are internationally recognized as leaders in the treatment of pediatric airway disorders, such as recurrent respiratory papillomatosis and subglottic hemangioma. Each year at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego, numerous children undergo surgical management of their airway abnormalities with the use of endoscopic, laser and open airway reconstructive techniques.
The physicians in the division are also dedicated to the education of their pediatric colleagues as well as physicians-in-training, including medical students, residents and fellows. Their active involvement in many professional societies is also evidence of their commitment to their specialty and their desire to stay abreast of the most current information in their field.
In addition, these pediatric otolaryngologists are also devoted to research and have been involved with clinical investigations that have studied innovative drugs and techniques for the treatment of ear infections, tonsil disease, recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, and lymphatic malformations.
