The surgeons in the Pediatric Orthopedic and Scoliosis Center form an orthopedic surgical specialty group providing:
- State of the art care in children's orthopedic surgery
- Specialty care of all aspects of scoliosis and spinal deformity in children and young adults
- Sports medicine for children and teenagers - prevention and treatment of injuries.
What is a Children's Orthopedist?
An orthopedic surgeon, or orthopedist, is a surgeon specializing in the care of disorders of muscles, bones and joints. This requires completion of a residency training program of four to five years, undertaken after medical school and internship.
A children's orthopedic surgeon, or pediatric orthopedist, has completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopedics, which is an additional year of specialty training after completion of a residency. This advanced training is focused completely on the diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic problems in children from birth to 18 years of age.
Doctors Mubarak, Wenger, Chambers, Newton, Wallace, and Pring have completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopedics. In addition, they are the only orthopedic group in San Diego County who practice full time pediatric orthopedics. By devoting their entire careers to the care of children, they are able to focus on the specific orthopedic problems of childhood.
All six doctors are active in patient care, teaching and research and have clinical faculty appointments in the Department of Orthopedics, University of California-San Diego. In addition, their active participation and leadership positions in many professional organizations devoted to the care of children help to ensure state of the art orthopedic care.

Doctors Mubarak, Wenger, Chambers, Newton, Wallace, and Pring have produced over 400 publications in the scientific literature and several surgical texts have also been published.

Advantages of a Children's Orthopedic Group
Consultation and Continuity:
The physicians in our group consult with each other regularly, particularly for children with complex problems, providing the advantage of their combined experience of over 75 years of orthopedic practice. Every child referred to the practice is provided 24 hour coverage, 7 days a week, by physicians in the group. Patients are seen in our offices, as well as the inpatient, outpatient, and Emergency Department areas of Rady Children's Hospital, allowing patients to be cared for in the optimal setting for their particular problem.
Education + Experience = Excellence:
The large number of children and teenagers in our practice encourages expertise in many areas, including fractures, hip dysplasia, scoliosis, cerebral palsy and a wide range of other orthopedic conditions.
The Simple Things:
What type of cast is best for a child? How long does it really need to be on? When is surgery needed? Doctors who occasionally treat children may not have the volume or experience to provide truly specialized care for children with orthopedic problems.
Communication
With you and your child: Our staff will provide you with clear information regarding your child's diagnosis and treatment. Questions regarding treatment and possible surgery will be answered in an understandable way.
With your referring physician: Each consultation and all follow-up visits are concluded with a personal report to your child's referring physician describing details of the examination and recommendations.

The Evaluation
The initial appointment will include taking a history of the problem, review of previous records and x-rays, examination of the child, diagnostic tests and recommendations.
History and Examination:
Your child will be seen initially by a specially trained Physician's Assistant (PA), Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Orthopedic Technologist, who will begin the evaluation. The physician will then complete the examination, study the x-rays or other images, and formulate a treatment plan. In certain clinics and for straight forward problems, the NP/PA will provide both the diagnosis and the treatment plan.
NP/PA
As the specialty of children's orthopedics has advanced, we have developed a group of nurse practitioners and physician assistants with specialized training in children's orthopedics. These individuals can work in all capacities in our system including the emergency department, the orthopedic clinics at Rady Children's Hospital, and in our orthopedic office. Their skill and training as well as empathetic approach to orthopedic care is a tremendous asset to our group practice.

Diagnostic Tests
X-rays:
For complete evaluation of orthopedic problems, full x-ray facilities are conveniently available in the office.
|
| |
Ultrasonography:
Ultrasound studies are performed in our office. This allows on-site state-of-the-art evaluation of developmental dysplasia and dislocation of the hip in infants, as well as diagnosis of other orthopedic conditions.
|
| |
In some conditions…
The child may be referred to Rady Children's Hospital for sophisticated tests such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Bone Scan and Computerized Tomography (CT) (including three dimensional analysis).
|
Treatment
After your child's initial exam and any needed diagnostic tests are completed, the physician will discuss your child's condition with you and make recommendations for further care or treatment.
Choices may include:
Further Observation and Follow-up:
In some children's orthopedic conditions, the recommendation may be to observe the child with no treatment. In other words, sometimes the best treatment is observation. A clear explanation and educational materials will be provided to help you understand why we have elected to wait and watch, rather than intervene.
Non-Operative Treatment:
Your doctor may recommend specific treatment for your child's condition. Many orthopedic problems are improved by rest, medication, exercise, physical therapy, casts or special braces.
Surgery:
Some children's orthopedic conditions and spinal disorders may require surgical correction. Surgery is performed at Rady Children's Hospital- San Diego because of their excellent staff. They share our philosophy of caring for the emotional as well as the physical needs of children and parents. The anesthesia specialists and pediatric consultants at Rady Children's provide the highest quality care before, during and after surgery.
Patient Appointments
Referral through a physician or other health care provider, another patient, or self-referral.
If your child has prior x-rays, you must hand-carry them to your appointment to ensure that the x-rays are available for review.
